Workshop mit Chris Mennel. Gastkonzert: MODDROW SCHLAGWERK-THEATER
Es geht um´s Auf-den-Kopf-Stellen. Wir versuchen, Gegenteile zu formulieren
- von Dingen, die wir als Ziel im Kopf haben
- von heilen, munteren und netten Versionen, wie uns die Welt dargestellt wird (z.B. in Werbung, Religion, Erziehung und dekorativer Kunst)
Wir suchen nach künstlerischem Darstellen solcher Gegenteile zum arg Üblichen, allzu Häufigen:
- Bilder, Reliefs, Skulpturen - möglichst in einigen Stunden erstellbar
- Performances
Liebe Freunde, liebe Feinde.
Ein wunderbarer Spruch, der Buddha zugeschrieben wird, lautet „Bring mit, was du suchst“.
Ein mieser Spruch, der dem Teufel zugeschrieben wird, lautet „Wirf weg, was du gefunden hast.“

Einzelheiten für Teilnehmende
Wir sammeln Botschaften, die uns beeinflussen oder zu beeinflussen zu versuchen. Wir denken theoretisch nach, wie das Gegenteil aussähe.
Wir überlegen, was wir von unseren gegenteiligen Ideen praktisch zeigen könnten. Wir erzeugen Gegenständliches zum Workshop-Thema "Pfeif auf die Werte". Das darf Kunst sein.
Der Werte-Pfeif-Workshop braucht einen ersten Tag, an dem wir - mal einzeln, mal als Gruppe - uns auf Inhalte einigen und vielleicht schon einige Performances erstellen. Wir brauchen aber vermutlich manches Material und vielleicht Kleidungs-Wandel. Das bringen wir an einem zweiten Tag mit und legen los.
Freitag den 4.7.2025 tröpfelnd zwischen 11 und 17 h, planend, würfelnd. Ab 20 h ausklingend: Vorübergehendes Nebeneinander aller notierter Ideen und Vorschläge und Pläne an den Wänden der Oberwelt, festgeheftet für einen Tag mit Teppichkleber, evtl. Reißnägeln.
Ziel: Bau- Bastel- und Performance-Pläne der Teilnehmenden zu sammeln, zu provozieren, anzuhören, die Durchführbarkeit abzuklopfen.
Samstag den 5.7.: Bastel-Workshop, Malaktionen, Performance-Vorbereitung. Auftritt Steffen Moddrow 20 h und Vernissage. Los geht´s um 11 h. Die Oberwelt als Werkstatt. Ihr bringt mit, was zum Bauen und Basteln, zum Verkleiden und Mitteilen euch noch als fehlend einfiel. Großpause 15 bis 16 h? Oder alle mit zu ihnen passenden Zwischenpausen? Wir klären das.
Was wird da sein? Große Papierflächen, also 2 x 2 Meter und mehr. Viele Schreib- und Mal-Stifte. Teppichkleber, Reißnägel - die möglichst reichen sollen, um beschriebene Flächen an der Wand zu halten bis zum nächsten Tag. Hammer und Nägel. Zum Umschauen für den Folgetag schon mal: Vorformen möglicher Schnell-Skulpturen, Tücher, einige Verkleidungen, Bastel-Material, Kleingerät zum Lärm-Erzeugen.
Ein installatives Gebilde "Traumfänger" im Hinterraum: 2 x 2 x 2 m Gestell eines Pavillons. Schnüre, Schere: Da kann Material dran aufgehängt werden.
Eine Honorierung des veranstaltenden Künstlers ist denkbar durch Mitbringen von kleinen kunsthaften Gegenständen. Sie werden in der Kunst-Konstruktion "Traumfänger" an Schnüren aufgehängt oder dekorieren die Wand. Gern darf Essen und Trinken mitgebracht werden. Tee und Sprudel stehen bereit. Geld kostet der Workshop nicht.
Wir sind gut beraten, schon bevor wir uns treffen, uns parallel zueinander mitzuteilen:
1. Welchen Wert will ich in die Runde werfen? In die Zange nehmen?
2. Wie stelle ich mir das Kopfstellen dieses Wertes vor?
3. Sehe ich eine Szene, etwas Geräuschhaftes, etwas mit Text, ein Bild vor mir über das, was ich von polaren Seiten aus angehen möchte?
Mailt mich bitte mit eurem Input zu diesen drei Fragen an. Mit der e-mail erklärt ihr euch einverstanden, dass ich eure Nachricht intern an Teilnehmende umverteile.
Unser Gast-Star am Samstag den 5. Juli 2025, nach manchem Workshoppen, wird Steffen Moddrow sein: MODDROW SCHLAGWERKTHEATER
Steffen will während unseres Workshop-Samstags am Nachmittag dazukommen und seinen Performancebereich aufbauen. Gern möchte er um ungefähr 18 h mit uns einen Sound-Check durchführen: Wir als Klanglieferanten. Es soll nach Steffens Wunsch auch schon ein "Art-Check" sein: Was liefern wir denn so, und was nicht? Nach unserem Sound-Art-Check, ungefähr ab 18.30 h, werden wir schrittweise schauen, wie wir die Oberwelt rings um Steffens Auftritts-Kokon herum dekorieren. Natürlich kann auch noch weiter gebastelt werden. Um etwa 20 h sollte alles erstrahlen oder auch kaputt vor sich hinröcheln - ich habe keine Ahnung von den Ergebnissen :-) und gespanntes Kurz-Gar-Nichts eintreten.
Dann: Steffen! Anschließend: Sichtung der Workshop-Werke. Momente des Trinkens, Essens, Plauderns, sowie, falls vorhanden: Performance bis in die Puppen.
Chris will filmen und fotografieren. Die Teilnehmer erklären sich mit ihrer Anmeldung einverstanden, dass sie mit Aufzeichnungen und Ergebnissen des Workshops in Kunstpräsentationen von Chris Mennel vertreten sind.

Diversity Of Sticking & Preparations
Seit den 1990er Jahren entwickelt Steffen Moddrow eine einzigartige Klang- und Materialsprache, durch Einbeziehen alltäglicher Gegenstände wie z.B. elektronische Spielsachen, Klebebänder, Bierdosen, Naturmaterialien, wie Zweige und Blätter, in musikalische Zusammenhänge. Es findet eine Umdeutung und Verwandlung nicht instrumentaler Objekte, sowie auch die Präparation seines Drum Sets, statt.
In „Diversity Of Sticking & Preparations“ erforscht der Schlagwerker und Performancekünstler Steffen Moddrow die klanglichen Möglichkeiten jenseits klassischer Instrumententechnik. Zwischen Klanginstallation, Konzert und szenischer Aktion entfaltet sich ein akustisches Spielfeld, in dem seine Fundstücke und Spielzeuge zu Hauptakteuren einer ungewöhnlichen Klangwelt werden. Mit rhythmischer Präzision, improvisatorischer Offenheit und dadaistischem Humor läßt er hypnotische Beats zersplittern, schafft mit surrealen Texten Mini-Hörspiele und skurrile Klangcollagen. Es entsteht eine Musik zwischen Struktur und Zufall, zwischen Körperklang und Maschinenritual, zwischen Trash und Poesie.
Steffen Moddrow wurde 1960 in Stuttgart geboren, studierte Schlagwerk an der Musikakademie Kassel und arbeitet als Schlagzeuger und Performancekünstler. (Auftritte u. a. beim „Nuclear Free Future Award“ in New York 2010 und am Theater Tri-Bühne, Stuttgart, mit Balafon-Virtuose Gert Kilian und dem Tänzer Nestor Gahé). („Sett, europ.Theaterfestival 2012“)
2020 Wirkte er als Solist und Komponist bei den Kasseler Musiktagen mit. Zudem komponierte Moddrow die Musik für zahlreiche Filme, z. B. „Higgs“ von Monika Stellmach und „Modern Face“ von Ulf Staeger. 2003 erhielt er beim Fantoche Film Festival (Baden/Schweiz) den Preis für die beste Filmmusik.
Er veröffentlichte CDs, u. a. in Kooperation mit dem ehemaligen Zappa-Schlagzeuger Jimmy Carl Black („Behind The Mirror“, Georg Stock) und mit dem Jazz Trio „Unterholz“ (Martin Speicher und Sven Krug, 2025, UNIT Records), lehrte an an der Schule für Clowns in Mainz, an Musikschulen in Göttingen, Warburg und zur Zeit in Baunatal.
Er veröffentlichte Texte in Anthologien, wie z. B. „Mein heimliches Auge“ IX, 1994 und im Verlag „Stadtlichterpresse“ (2020-23), wurde gefördert durch die Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg und war an Theatern in Stuttgart, Augsburg, Heidelberg als Komponist und musikalischer Leiter für verschiedene Produktionen tätig, sowie für die UA von Robert Seethaler’s „Trafikant“ 2016 an der WLB Esslingen und zuletzt in Kooperation mit dem Regisseur Marcel Keller ebenfalls in Esslingen („Momo“ 2024).

Workshop with Chris Mennel, Guest concert: MODDROW PERCUSSION THEATRE
It’s about turning things upside down. We are trying to express opposites
- of things we think of as goals
- of nice, bright, complete versions as the world presents them to us (e.g. in advertising, religion, education and decorative art)
We are searching for artistic representations of these opposites of the terribly normal, all-too-common:
- images, relief works, sculptures – where possible to be made in a few hours
- performances
Dear friends and foes,
A wonderful saying, attributed to the Buddha, tells us: ‘Bring what you are searching for.’
A miserable saying, attributed to the devil, tells us: ‘Throw away what you have found.’
You see that doors are open to us. You overlook that we are trapped.
Details for participants
We collect messages that influence us or try to influence us. We consider theoretically what the opposite would look like.
We think about what we are able to show of our opposite ideas in practical terms. We create something concrete on the theme of our workshop, ‘Flout the values’. This may be art.
The value-flouting workshop requires an initial day where – working partly on our own and partly as a group – we agree on contents and maybe even create some performances. However, we will probably need some materials and perhaps changes of clothes. We bring these along on the second day and off we go.
Friday, 4 July 2025 trickling in between 11 am and 5 pm, planning, playing. From 8 pm finishing off: temporary display of all recorded ideas and suggestions and plans side by side on the walls of Oberwelt, affixed for a day using carpet tape, possibly drawing pins.
Aim: to gather, provoke, hear participants’ construction and performance plans, and sound out feasibility.
Saturday, 5 July: craft workshop, painting activities, performance preparation. Performance with Steffen Moddrow at 8 pm and opening. We start at 11 am. Oberwelt is our workshop. You bring whatever you felt was missing for craft and construction, dressing up and communicating. Longer break 3 to 4 pm? Or everyone taking shorter breaks when it suits them? We’ll decide together.
What will be there? Large pieces of paper, i.e. 2 x 2 metres and more. Plenty of pens, pencils and crayons. Carpet tape, drawing pins – which should be enough to keep the paper on the wall until the next day. Hammer and nails. Early ideas to look out for for the following day: pre-forms of possible quick sculptures, sheets, some costumes, craft materials, small-scale equipment for making noise.
A ‘dreamcatcher’ installation structure in the back room: 2 x 2 x 2 m frame of a pavilion. String, scissors: material can be hung on it.
Remuneration of the organising artist is possible by bringing small, artistic objects. They will be hung on the ‘dreamcatcher’ art construction with string or used to decorate the walls. You are welcome to bring food and drink. Tea and sparkling water will be available. There is no charge for the workshop.
Before we meet, it would be a good idea for us to share with each other:
1. Which value do I want to throw out there? Get to grips with?
2. How do I imagine turning this value on its head?
3. Do I have a scene, some noise, something with text, an image in mind, concerning the thing I’d like to approach from polar opposite sides?

Our guest star on Saturday, 5 July 2025, following some workshopping, will be Steffen Moddrow
Steffen wants to come along during our Saturday workshop and set up his performance space. Around 6 pm he’d like to conduct a sound check with us – we act as sources of sound. At Steffen’s request there will also be an ‘art check’: what do we deliver in this way, and what do we not? After our sound/art check, from about 6:30 pm, we’ll then gradually look at how we want to decorate Oberwelt around Steffen’s performance nest. Of course we can also keep on making things. Around 8 pm everything should be ready to shine, or indeed collapse with a groan – I have no idea of the results :-) and there’ll be a brief rapt moment of nothing at all.
Then: Steffen! And after that: viewing of the workshop pieces. Time for drinking, eating, chatting and, if we have them: performances into the small hours.
Chris will film and photograph. By registering, participants agree to being represented in art presentations by Chris Mennel via recordings and the results of the workshop.

Diversity Of Sticking & Preparations
Since the 1990s, Steffen Moddrow has been developing a unique language of sounds and materials, by using everyday objects such as electronic toys, rubber bands, beer cans, and natural materials like twigs and leaves, in musical contexts. What happens is a reinterpretation and transformation of non-instrumental objects, as well as the preparation of his drum kit.
In ‘Diversity Of Sticking & Preparations’, the percussionist and performance artist Steffen Moddrow explores the possibilities of sound beyond traditional instrumental techniques. Between sound installations, concert and scenic work, an acoustic playing field evolves, in which his found objects and toys become main players in an extraordinary sound world. With rhythmic precision, improvisational openness and Dadaistic humour, he allows hypnotic beats to fragment, and creates mini audio dramas with surreal texts and bizarre sound collages. A type of music emerges that lies between structure and coincidence, between the sound of the body and the ritual of machines, between poetry and trash.
Steffen Moddrow was born in Stuttgart in 1960, studied percussion at the Kassel Music Academy and works as a percussionist and performance artist. (Performances include at the ‘Nuclear Free Future Award’ in New York, 2010, and at the Theater tri-bühne, Stuttgart, with balafon virtuoso Gert Kilian and dancer Nestor Gahé, as part of SETT European theatre festival, 2012.)
In 2020 he took part in the Kasseler Musiktage as a soloist and composer. In addition Moddrow has composed music for numerous films, such as Higgs by Monica Stellmach and Modern Face by Ulf Staeger. In 2003 he won the prize for best film music at the Fantoche Film Festival (Baden, Switerland).
He has released CDs, including in collaboration with the former Zappa drummer Jimmy Carl Black (‘Behind The Mirror’, Georg Stock) and with the jazz trio Unterholz (Martin Speicher and Sven Krug, 2025, UNIT Records), and has taught at the School for Clowns in Mainz, and at music schools in Göttingen, Warburg and (currently) in Baunatal.
He has published texts in anthologies, such as Mein heimliches Auge IX (1994) and with the publishing house Stadtlichter Presse (2020–23), and has been supported by the Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg. He has worked as composer and musical director for various productions at theatres in Stuttgart, Augsburg and Heidelberg, as well as for the première of Robert Seethaler’s Trafikant (2016) at WLB Esslingen and recently in cooperation with director Marcel Keller, also in Esslingen (Momo, 2024).
